SMS Consent & Opt-In Flow

This page documents how SettledUp collects and manages SMS consent for both business owners who use the platform and their customers who receive payment reminders.

Section 1 — How Business Owners Opt In

Business owners provide explicit SMS consent during account registration at settledup.co/sign-up. The signup form contains two separate consent checkboxes — both unchecked by default and both required before the account can be created. Consent is recorded in our database along with a timestamp and IP address at the time of submission.

Section 2 — What Business Owners Receive

After opting in, business owners receive the following types of SMS messages from SettledUp:

  • Morning AR summary texts listing overdue invoices, sent once per business day when overdue invoices exist
  • Spreadsheet update reminder texts when AR data has not been updated in 7 days
  • Account alerts as needed (e.g. payment received notifications)

Sample messages:

Sample 1 — Morning AR Summary

“Good morning! You have 3 overdue invoices totaling $4,200. Reply YES to confirm payments received or NO to send reminders. Reply STOP to opt out.”

Sample 2 — Spreadsheet Staleness Reminder

“SettledUp reminder: Your Accounts Receivable spreadsheet hasn't been updated in 7 days. Please log in to upload your latest file. Reply STOP to opt out.”

Section 3 — How End Customers Opt In

SettledUp sends payment reminders on behalf of business owners to their customers (invoice recipients). Business owners are required during onboarding to confirm — via a mandatory checkbox — that they have added the following disclosure language to their customer invoices before any reminders are sent:

Required Invoice Disclosure Language

“Payment reminders may be sent via text to the number on file. Reply STOP to opt out.”

This disclosure must appear on the invoice before the customer's phone number is added to SettledUp. Additionally, every first reminder message sent to a new customer includes a STOP opt-out instruction.

Section 4 — Opt-Out Instructions

All recipients — both business owners and their customers — can opt out of SMS messages at any time.

  • The following keywords are all supported and immediately honored: STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT
  • Replying HELP returns support contact information: travis@settledup.co
  • Opt-outs are recorded in the SettledUp database and no further messages are sent to that number
  • Business owners can also view and manage customer opt-outs from their SettledUp dashboard
